The heat, naturally, is on them to get the job done. Having made it so close in past playoff campaigns, Philadelphia’s fan base demands nothing less than a deep playoff run, and anything less than a Super Bowl would be disappointing.
Texans on the Rise
If the present is Philadelphia, the future is Houston. The Texans have become one of the most exhilarating young franchises in the league on the strength of the breakout of quarterback C.J. Stroud. In a brief period, Stroud has turned Houston’s offense into a dynamic force that is now able to keep up with the league’s best. His calmness, accuracy, and ability to make plays outside of structure make him the focal point of a franchise that’s finally headed in the right direction.
But it’s not only Stroud. The Texans have constructed a well-rounded team that is a testament to astute front-office thinking. Their receiving unit has developed into one of the most feared in the league, providing Stroud with several sound options. On defense, a young but skilled core has flashed instances of dominance, particularly in pressuring quarterbacks.
What makes the Texans particularly formidable is their hunger. Unlike proven contenders, they have nothing to lose and much to gain. Houston is not yet a finished product, but they’re quickly climbing the ranks and might be this year’s most dangerous dark horse.
Other Top Contenders
While the Texans and Eagles make headlines, a number of other teams are still very much in the running for Super Bowl contention.
Kansas City Chiefs: Any discussion about rankings wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Despite struggling to retool their roster, Mahomes’ presence guarantees Kansas City is still a top contender. It’s now a matter of how much their defense can aid another championship push.
San Francisco 49ers: Famous for their physicality and depth, the 49ers are still one of the league’s most balanced teams. With Christian McCaffrey playmakers and a strong defense, San Francisco has the weapons to make another deep postseason run.
Buffalo Bills: Josh Allen leads the Bills as perennial playoff hopefuls, although playoff disappointment has become their norm in the last few years. This season might be make-or-break time for Buffalo as they try to finally break through.
Detroit Lions: No longer a rebuilding club, the Lions are now a serious contender. Dan Campbell’s leadership changed the culture, and with Jared Goff throwing efficient football, Detroit has the chance to remain in the top tier of the NFC.
Teams on the Bubble
Several teams are middling, with the potential to surprise or disappoint based on what transpires.
Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Burrow’s health is still the largest story. When he’s healthy, Cincinnati is one of the most feared teams in the league. But consistency and injuries have kept them from reaching that next level.
Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys are always the polarizing team. They have talent, but they have yet to show they can win big games when it counts. Dak Prescott has all the weapons at his disposal, but postseason performances elude them.
Miami Dolphins: Miami’s speed and creativity make them exciting to watch, but questions about durability and defensive consistency could determine whether they rise or fall.
Teams Facing Challenges
Not every team has a rosy outlook heading into NFL 2025 Power Rankings. Some are clearly in rebuilding phases or struggling to find identity.
